CHURCH HISTORY
FIRST UNITED CHURCH was organized in 1926 under Pastor Rev. L.H. Mays and 15 persons. Service was held in a store front located at 17th and market street. As membership grew the church moved into a building located on Sloan Street, just above Lancaster Avenue, on April 11,1944. First united received its charter under the leadership of Pastor Mickens. The membership increased and the church purchase a building on the corner of Lancaster and Haverford Avenue. The membership outgrew this space and on first Sunday, March 4, 1856, relocated to our current location at 3728 Haverford Avenue
Since it’s inception First United has been led by 8 godly men. Rev. L.H.Mays, Rev. McLovely, Rev. Mickens, Rev. K.J. Purdy, Henry S Flagg, Rev. Ora M. Locust, Rev. Samuel B. Atkins, and our current Pastor Rev. Dr. Craig W. Martin Sr. We honor and recognize our founding members, Mother Elizabeth Holiday, Mother Mabel Harper, Mother Mary Felix, and Sister Evelyn Bickerstaff, for their steadfastness’ and dedication to the church.
